Go: Legion of Honor & de Young

Go: Legion of Honor & de Young

Today is the first day of summer break for my children. Hence, the late blog post. Thankfully, my Go idea for today is pretty straightforward:

Tomorrow is the first Tuesday of the month, which means the Legion of Honor and the de Young (Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco) are offering free admission. I'm planning to take my children, with sketchbooks in hand. I'm going to ask them each to select a piece of art to sketch. I want them to realize there's no need to be intimidated by these masterpieces; they, too, can create gorgeous art. They had so much fun sketching churches in Europe last summer. The secret to sketching is turning off your brain and just letting your hand move. My biggest shock and biggest takeaway from the Fundamentals of Drawing class I took in college is this: no stroke has to be a mistake, it can all be incorporated into the sketch.

Children ages 12 and under are always free at these museums; adults are usually $10. The museums are open 9:30 am - 5:15 pm, Tuesday through Sunday. Maybe I'll see you there tomorrow! A stone's throw away from Silicon Valley lies the spectacular city of San Francisco: the hills, the character, the colors, the views—I just love San Francisco and all its flavors.
