Go: Long Ridge Preserve
Long Ridge Open Space Preserve is magical. It feels like you're within a topographical map, perched upon the highest peak with a landscape of hills, valleys, mountains, and finally, ocean unfolding before your eyes. The trail meanders through groves of ancient, mossy oaks and open, sunny meadows. It's ideal for hiking, running, and biking, with enough width for a jogging stroller. The inclines are moderate; the path travels along gentle, rolling hills. Long Ridge is great for children, just be sure to pack water & snacks and take some time to rest at the benches scattered along the way.
Start in Saratoga Village. Wind your way up the mountain on Highway 9. In less than 15 minutes, you'll arrive at Skyline Boulevard, the road that runs along the mountain ridge. Turn right on Skyline and drive 1.4 miles; the entrance to the preserve is on your left at the 1.4 mile point. It's easy to miss, definitely use your odometer. People drive fast on Skyline, so I recommend turning around and parking in front of the entrance.
This is the prime time to visit Long Ridge, before the grass turns golden in a few weeks. People of all ages will come alive as they explore this natural playground. Go, play, be refreshed, and enjoy!
